Mitch: If your going to run 15W-40, use it the year around. Southern Ontario doesn't see very cold winters, thus it will work fine. I've been using it for close to 20 years in everything from tractors, trucks, cars and small engines. I've only lived in Southern Ontario for 4 years and these winters are a picnic temperature wise compared to Nova Scotia. Now wind and snow are another matter.

Believe me, I have started vehicles in -40 weather, not often but -20F was quite common. I can take you to hundreds of forestry machines that start in these temperatures all winter with 15W-40, and no block heaters as they are parked miles from any electricity. Some are starting to use propane fired block heaters, not primarily as a starting assist but rather to save engine wear.

I don't use anything when I start my C. (except when the temp is about 20-30 below zero) Then I use the magnetic type heater.

I would recommend that you use at least SOME type of oil. Your engine wear must be tremendous.

jostev: In all fairness to Jon, you did leave yourself open to his suggestion that you might not have used any oil. Afterall the the title of this thread was, "What oil do you guys use for winter?" In changing the subject to starting aids, you should have suggested the same. I'm not trying to be smart, just pointing out the care one must use when making a point.

10W-30 should be fine for your location.

Personally, in your area, I would use 5W-30 synthetic. You you do not wish to use synthetic, go with 10W-30. Remember, those old manuals were written when before the quality standards of today's oils were established. Cold engine oil circulation is the main consideration during the cold months.

The old operator's manual on my H says, below +32F, 10W. I use 15W40 year-round and thus for my much-milder-than-yours winters. I'd strongly urge getting some sort of block heater. I saw a quote somewhere that offered that 80% of wear on an engine that's operated in winter climes happens with the cold-weather starts. With that in mind, even though I've never had an ounce of trouble starting my H in temps near zero, I installed a tank heater last winter. I'd turn it on for a couple of hours (1500W!) before each start and all the starts were just like summer.

I'm also in CT and I change over to 20wt. for the winter. I have to agree with dave that preheating the engine is very good idea. I use a magnet heater on the block and that seems to work pretty good. Andrew

Yeah, my tank heater was given to me. If I had to buy one, I'd go for the magnet type block heater. What part of CT are you in?
