Should the power steering work all the time on this tractor? When the remotes are activated to raise a plow or a disk the power steering works fine, but sitting still and at an idle the power steering does not work. Is this the way the power steering works on this tractor?

Dash Many 300 400 came with power steeing way a flow divider to give power steering 3 gallon of oil. Not the best way but did work, if the flow divider is bad it could act as you say. The other thing that I have seen many times is the steering sector gets so bad that no amount of power will turn the fron wheels unless the tractor is moving.

Where would the follow divider be located if it has one?

Nope.

Power steering was an aftermarket add-on on these tractors. That means it's a crap shoot as far as how it's plumbed.

It's probably just Tee'd off the pressure line somewhere. There needs to be a priority valve installed that sends the bulk of the pressure to the power steering, and only taps pressure when the remotes are activated.

Hi Nat,

Might have been an "option" er something.

My dad bought a brand new 400D in '56, came off the truck with intergral power steering and was the first tractor I ever saw with a horn.

I've also since seen the old devils with the belt driven "hang on" pump, so I am thinking that not all of 'em had the factory setup.

Allan

Nat,

I beg to differ on your assessment of PS on the 400-450. It was an IH engineered system using a Behlin actuator. One only has to look at the parts book to figure that out. It may not have been available on the first 400s. I have #519 and have sucessfully retrofitted the factory setup.

One of two things have happened here. The IH flow control valve is not functioning properly or someone has installed PS without putting in all the right parts.

Wardner, I believe you could be on to something this power steering was installed from the factor. Where would I find the flow control valve your talking about?
