I discovered today that mt steering box main side shaft is broken because I have 1/2 inch of side movement in the left side and the right one doesn't move when the left is pushed and pulled. I guess I'll need a steering box or a new shaft. Has anyone ever welded a broken one?
Any help appreciated-ron

This is what the right side shaft looks like in a 460U gearbox, the 300U is similar. The shaft doesn't go all the way thru, the left and right shafts mesh together with the sector gear. the other one is for the rack on the P/S cylinder to mesh with. On the left end of the picture there is a bolt that is used to adjust the backlash, yours might have that bolt broken or missing, which would account for the side play in the shaft. In any case, you'll have to take the gearbox out and disassemble it.

My remembering is that the left shaft turns ccw when turning the tractor left Looking at it from the end of the shaft, and the right shaft turns ccw on the same left turn, again while looking at the end of the shaft from the rt side of the tractor. These are opposite directions, so the shafts can't be solid through the box. Unless my brain is more than normally erronious.

Brain emmissions were wrong, change turning left to turning right and my argument still stands.
Sorry, JimN
