I stand corrected, they changed to twelve volts at serial # 14600 for gas engines. LP gas and diesel used 12 volt system.

My 1957 350 U (s/n - 7210S) is a 6v positive ground.

Not sure if that helps.

I belive the 350's came with a 12 volt system, which would make it a neg. groung system.

Our 1957 350ute gas was 6 pos. ground. There were many Letter and XX0 diesel tractors with 12 v pos ground factory generator systems. I don't know why IH kept the 6v on the gas units. It seems like a mediocre idea. A nice original looking system uses 12v pos ground generator/reg. (I like alternators they are near maintenance free and top up the battery well).
My 2 cents JimN

Not necesssarily. I believe IH was still producing positive ground systems up through 1958. The 460/560 series tractors were the first negative ground in 1959.

My dad's 400 is a 12V positive ground.

It was originally POS ground and if you have a POS ground regulator, you should wire it back pos ground. The generater does not care as long as its flashed after installation. Pos ground, the + on the coil goes to the distributor, and the amp meter is wired to read correctly.

The voltage reg should be marked, maybe a sticker on the back. If not you may need to check the part number with a napa store or IH.

Positive ground means just that. The positive battery cable goes right to the frame (gound). The negitive battery cable will likely go to a starter switch and then to the starter as well as the regulator.
