I have heard that some IH cylinder number 1 fireings orders start in the back or flywheel but many are in the front or balancer.
How do you tell the differance if this is true?
And where to look besides the IT manuals that I did not find any thing in?

Where did you "hear" this little tidbit of misinformation?

#1 cylinder is always in front, at least on US-built IH tractors.

Doesn't matter anyway, at least with the 4-cylinder engines... They're symmetrical, which means if you choose the rear cylinder as #1, then time the distributor that way, it'll run fine.

On a 4 cylinder engine you can use No4 piston at TDC to install your distr or mag, but it's still at the rear of the engine and you would have to
install the distr or mag with the rotor at No4
plug wire. Never seen an engine from this country that numbers from the flywheel and that goes back 55 years for me when I was a teen.
Of course if you're referring to 1 cylinder engines that would be correct. Hal

I've had IH tractors for about 45 years now and have yet to see one that is numbered back to front. Now, I will admit I have not seen every model. I did however own 16 of them all the way from Super A to a 1066 and at least one from each series in between.
