Merry Christmas to all. I am looking for information on installing power steering on one of my Farmall M gas tractors. The options can be: new or used, aftermarket or adaption of other tractor power steering unit. We still use one of our old Farmall M for basic farm chores.

Hi,

I need to replace the power steering pump on a Farmall M I'm restoring. Much prefer the design that mounts up under the hood... seems they're scarce. Will appreciate any advice, related experience, or info related to powering the steering system from the (new) live hydraulic pump already on the tractor.

If any of you still want a copy of the Charlyn installation instructions or photos of the hydraulics please e-mail me directly. Been having hard drive problems today - lost track of who asked for what...

I have Char-Lyn power steering on a Super MTA that is plumbed into the live hydraulics and works very well. On a plain M you would either need to convert to live hydraulics or use the set up with a separate belt-driven pump and reservoir. Mark Mathis of Cairo, MO deals in both new and used units of both types. His # is 660-295-4456. I think I can dig up his E-mail address if you need it.

Thank you for the information. We farm
about 310 acres with mostly new tractors
but I still like running the old Farmall M
for lite chores like pulling seed trailers,
ring rollers, seed broadcasters, etc.

From my experience you cannot go wrong with the Charlyn power steering kit. We installed them on a pair of Super M's about 30 years ago - both continue to function perfectly today. Only drawback is you need live hydraulics or else a separate pump added to your tractor.

I still have the original instruction sheets that came with the power steering kit. I scanned 'em and will e-mail them to you.

I also have a couple of digital photos of the setup on my Super M - I can e-mail them too if you wish. Just let me know.

I have a CharLynn power steering unit on my Farmall 400. It works great except the reservoir that came on it leaks pretty bad. My tenant had the same unit on his JD 70 and had the same problem. Any suggestions?

My Charlyn setup uses the live hydraulic reservior - there is no separate steering reservior. Afraid I cannot help much on this one...

Oh well thanks anyway Bob. I just keep a bottle of fluid in the toolbox by the belt pulley so I am not stranded anywhere.
