I seen in your reply to about the stuck Farmall H that it has dry sleeves and no o-rings on the pistons. I am just getting into tractor restoration and I just needed to know how this dry sleeve system works. Also just wondering what the purpose of this would be and if it was used on the super H and how about the other letter series tractors the A,B,C, and M. Thanks, it's always good to learn more about tractors and any information is appreciated.

The automobile companies should've used sleeves in all their vehicles. Would've made it easier to rebuild an engine. Ford used some sleeves
in the 40's. That was before I ever worked on any of them. Replacing a sleeve is almost like magic, you have a new cylinder almost in a instant. Maybe not that quick. Hal

As to the letter, super, and early numbered series, A thru 240 are wet. H thru 450 are dry.

All the farmall letter tractors I have been into have dry sleeves. The sleeve is pressed into the block and are not a part of the water jacket. You pull them out with a puller and the easiest way to put back in is to freeze the sleeve and do this on a hot day so the block is hot, then push the cold sleeve in the block. The purpose is, when you do a rebuild it cuts cost, you buy piston and sleeve kits, then you can do a rebuild yourself, you do not have to take the engine completly out of the tractor, you do not have to take it a machine shop to get bored. Makes for a simple way to do it. As for why a dry sleeve and not a wet sleeve, that I do not know.

Thank you all for explaining this to me I had just never heard of a dry sleeve system. However how does this system get oiled if it is a true dry sleeve or is this just a term for the system.

The word DRY in this case indicates no coolant comes in contact with the sleeve. It still requires same lubrication as any engine.

Hugh,

Didn't IH go even further into the later series with dry sleeves? CNKS said through 450, but I used to have a 560 and I'm sure I remember it having dry sleeves. I thought the 06 series had dry sleeves and even some of the 56 series.
Am I wrong on this one?

CEB: Yes you are right, 66 series was the first wet sleeve other than the tractors with C-113 and C-123 engines. I"m not sure on the C-135 as I never had one. All the larger tractors however were dry sleeve. I don"t include pre 1939 tractors as I know very little about them. Before my time, I"m a 42 model myself.
