Every now and then fluid drips out of the bottom of the power steering box and down the sides of the frame. Yesterday while adjusting the front wheel spacing and toe in it leaked out about a 1/2 cup. Looks like it is coming out of a "freeze" type plug on the bottom of the box. Is that a common problem and is it a hard fix?
Also the fluid is a muddy color, looks real nasty.

Thanks for the information. I guess I now have the opportunity to take the gearbox/column apart. Are there any other problems to check for??

Thats a common problem. That welsh plug has a habit of popping out.I believe its caused when the steering shaft bearings wear, the shaft drops down and knocks that plug out.Maybe if it was spot welded back in,it would solve that problem. The steering box fluid is probably 80/90 gear lube.

The hydraulic system and the powersteering share fluid and pump (unless someone has modifies things)
Ugly fluid means it probably has water in it and needs changed. (I use good hydraulic fluid from a quality lubricant store not a farm and ranch type store) See many posts on this forum for quality discussions.
If the core plug is leaking from being worn, or pushed out, it is necessary to repair the wear before fixing the plug. Otherwise it just returns to bite the tender parts. A new core plug installed with the dome out and set with a wide flat drift so that the dome is flattened should fix the leak.
Good luck JimN
