It was a real bear to get it apaet and now I am getting ready to paint all the front end parts. Should I paint the areas of the outter tubes that slide into the main front axel tube or just grease the bare steel up real good and let it alone? Took me a few hours to get them seperated.

Thanks,

scott#2

scot: Clean the inner and outer tubes and the same with tyrods. Spray both inner and outer with graphite. I did my first one with graphite 40 years ago, didn't have in spray cans back then. It's better than paint and doesn't attract dirt and dust like grease.

Clean all the rust off the outside of the inner tube, clean the inside of the outer tube as best as you can, clean up the tie rods, coat the tie rods and the outside of the inner axle tube with Never-Seeze, slide the axle together, then paint.

A piece of 3/8 ready rod with a 3-1/2" wire wheel nutted to the end, and mounted in a 1/2" drill (to keep speed down some) will clean out the tube. LPS spray, or Moly antisieze brushed on will eliminate future grief. Be sure to clean off exterior surfaces with laquer thinner befor priming. Either rust inhibitor will cause paint not to stick. Tighten clamps correctly, and be sure through bolts are a good fit in their holes.
Good luck, JimN

I would grease the parts that will be together. If you paint them and don't wait a pretty long time the paint will stick them in the tubes pretty good.
