Cant see DC/14 mark on flywheel on Super A

I've got this thing all apart, oil pan off, clutch housing plate off and for the life of me I can't see any mark on the flywheel for timing the mag. I've sprayed, cleaned, sanded, staired from all angles. The book says to bring #1 up to TDC, then continue turning until the DC/14 mark is in line with the tab on the housing cover plate. Im not ready to time the mag yet but since I was in there I figured I would aquaint myself and make sure I have the mag pinion in right before I install the govornor housing. Since I cant find the mark can anyone tell me where I should make one on the flywheel? Does this 113 enging fire at TDC, before or after? And by how many degrees? If I get #1 at dead, true TDC, how much more do I need to turn it so the mark I will make will line up with the tab in the cover? Any ideas?

Thnank You,

scott#2

Had the exact same problem with my Super A. The mark just was not there. I figure the flywheel must have been replaced by one from a tractor with timing marks on crank pulley. I welded a pointer on the plate that the hand crank goes through and this makes timing the tractor a whole lot easier than looking up at the flywheel.

Scott#2, Could be you are looking on the wrong spot for the DC mark. Here's where they stamped it on a C113 flywheel.

Thanks for the pic, I wish it was that visable on mine, even without the chalk. Maybe it will be better at night with a light. Ill keep looking

You need to bring No1 piston up on the compression stroke to TDC. Have someone hand crank the engine until you feel compression against your thumb. Then stop cranking when you feel this and drop a large handle screwdriver in the hole and watch the screwdriver until it quits rising. Your DC/14 mark should be visible and should be near the engine side of the flywheel. If you find it chalk the line. This is when you install your mag or distributor. Hal

Yep I did all that but the mark still isnt there. So your are basically saying that it fires at dead TDC?

Thanks,

You probably need to wire buff that flywheel like in the picture. It has to be there. Hal

I promise you the mark is there. It may not have the letters, the one on my C does not. It is a very thin mark, that may require brushing the crud off the flywheel as you go. The TDC thing may be easier, but you can also turn the flywheel with a large screwdriver while holding a light. The static timing is set at TDC. After it starts there is a certain number of degrees of advance that is dependent on the rpm -- I don't have those numbers.
