M block crack?

I might have a small crack behind #4 clinder as I get a drop of water/antifreeze once a week near the sleeve. Someone suggested an engine sealent/any suggestions?

I am not that familiar with the dry sleeve design.
Questions for the experts.

Is there an 0 ring seal used at the bottom or top of the sleeve similar to wet sleeve engine?

If no O ring, does the head gasket seal the assembly?

Does she have a crack in the cast bore behind the sleeve?

Sounds like this motor froze up pretty good to crack the head and possibly the block.

Help us out, where do you see the drop that would cause you to think it was a sleeve? Pulling the oil pan is the only way to look at the sleeve, and all that is visible would be the bottom edge, the sleeves are dry and inserted into cast sleeve bores.
A photo might be helpful.

I purchased this non running M at auction. Pulled the pan and found antifreeze in the oil. Sent the cylinder head off to have it checked, several cracks were found, looking for another. Machine shop felt the cracks were large enough to cause antifreeze in the oil.

When I took the head off, there was still antifreeze left in the block, some leaked into the cylinders. So, #4 cylinder has been leaking out antifreeze for the past month, 1 drop a week, levels in the block have not changed. Could be left over antifreeze from the process describe above. The drip occurs at the contact between the sleeve and block it seems, does this help any?

Based on your comment about some of the coolant leking into the cylinders when you took the head off, I would propose that the 1 drip per week you're seeing is probably just some of that spilled coolant in the cylinder slowly working its way past the piston/rings.

I think you need to pull the pan and try and determine where the leak is. It could be a pin hole in the sleeve or the block is cracked. You may be better off to strip the block and have it magna-fluxed. You don't want that antifreeze in
your engine oil. Your auto machine shop can
provide you with your options. You can probably
find a good block and rebuild it. Hal

If the drip is showing up in the cylinder, above the piston. There is a need to check the sleeve and cylinder casting for cracks. There are permanent magnet crack checking tools and fluid that can be taken to the tractor and used on site. If it is actually comming out of the sleeve then the cyl casting must be compromised. I do not recommend repairing broken cylinder castings. There is archive info on sleeves that will help you decide.
A used block is a better alternative, with a set of dry sleeves they are basically better than new.
Good luck finding a different cause for the apparent water.

the lone drip is on the bottom of the #4 cylinder, 1 drip per week it seems like

I'd pull the sleve on that cyl and check the casting for cracks, There may be a pin hole, not crack. If a pinhole, there should be no problem drilling it snd using a brass plug in 1/8" pipe threads. Then machine off the plug top (very) flush with the rest of the cylinder casting (not below the surface, it needs cooling by contact) and put in a new sleve.
