We've got an H that had an old loader on it that leaked and have been using used motor oil in the hydraulic system for many years. (don't laugh, it actually worked OK) I've recently bought a decent loader and would think it's time to drain the system and use the correct fluid. What steps should I take?

OK, I won't laugh at you, basically because you have found what some of us already know, the hydraulics on these old Farmalls are very forgiving and will function just fine with just about anything you can pour in it. To do it right though, I would pull the drain plug on the bottom of the pump and let it drain for several hours, maybe overnight. Then refill. The original specs called for non-detergent motor oil, 30wt warm weather, 20 wt cooler weather, and 10wt for extreme cold. It would be a hassle I think to keep changing it all the time depending on the weather, so if you want you can put Hy-TRAN in it, or the equivalant any manufacturer. My dad used to put John Deere hydraulic oil in his H, and the tractor never knew the difference.

For an H,with a belly pump, that is not used with other equipment/tractors that might result in cross contamination of fluids, I would stay with 30 wt nondetergent oil. My experience is the thicker oil works better in these older pumps when they get to straining. My nickel Dick Davis
