140 farmall. I think it is a 1974. My grandaddy bought it new. From the first time i remember riding on it. I remember a whine in reverse and has always had a whine of some sort in all forward gears. some gears louder than others. None were very loud. Reverse always being the loudest by far. We recently changed the rearend grease 90wt gear oil. Since then it has developed a terrible whine in all forward gears much louder than any I have heared before. Gear case was filled correctly and since the noise we added another qt. Just to see what happened, no change.

Just to clarify a little. When I said it got louder I mean 10 times louder than its ever been.

Ashley: My suggestion jack each rear wheel, as jack takes weight of tractor, watch for looseness rear axle in relation to final drive. Good idea to remove caps from inner end of axle on back side of final drive. If those axle bearings get loose enough the grears can ride up on each other and break the final drive casting. There are also caps on final drive at outer end of upper shaft. Make sure those bearings are tight.

If you suspect noise is in transmission again jack each rear wheel separately a block tractor securly or chain it to another vehicle. Start tractor put it in gear and let jacked wheel turn. Now, you can get sophisticated and get a stethoscope, an isolate what area noise is coming from. A cheap method is cut off your wife's broom or mop handle, put one end to your ear and other end various parts of transmission or final drive. Come to think of it the stethoscope may cause you less grief.

You can also see quite a lot by removing transmission top around gear shift lever.

Is the gear noise coming from the transmission or the final drive. My B makes a lot of noise especially in the left final drive gears. All those old tractor's gears made noise because they are simple spur gears and they are inherently noising as opposed to helical gears. I think those final drive's make a lot of noise because of the large gear teeth, the large ratio, and the large bull gear that can resonate. Roger

My 49 Super A has gear whine in all gears with reverse being the worst. My mentor (a tractor mechanic and Farmall fanatic) said that all of those model transmissions he has been around have had that whine. Might just be the nature of the beast. Don't know why it would have gotten worse. Others here might know better.

I hope somebody jumps in with some good knowledge about this whining business; I've got a '51 Super A that whines like a Stuka dive bomber. I also put in an extra quart - no change. Any louder and I would have to wear ear plugs.
