I have a 1955 farmall 400 my great grandfather bought new in 1955 it has been on the farm ever since it has a white grill and side patches just like the 350 and 450 we have it 100% restored and avery one I see argues that it is painted wrong? It had the factory paint on it before we restored it why is it painted this way ?

I know of a Super M-TA that is painted like a 560.

400's are all IH-Red.

Simple: It was repainted to look like a 450, probably in 1957 or thereabouts.

I have heard from some of the old time dealers that when the 50's came out that they painted and added decals to the 00 series to make it look the same. So the statement that your 400 came from the factory that way is correct. But you very well could have bought it from the dealer brand new painted the same as a 450. Don't want to burst any bubles, that is how some 300 and 400 were bought new painted like 350's and 450's.

The dealer could have repainted the grille of a late 400, and added the decal to the hood, but the statement that is "came from the factory" that way is incorrect.

International Harvester had several incentive programs over the years for updating and repainting customers tractors. One of these programs was to update the 300s and 400s to look just like the newer 350 and 450 Farmalls. A few of the Hs and some of the Ms recieved this same treatment. The only way a 400 would have the same paint scheme as a 450 is if it were repainted at some point in its life. I see nothing wrong with a 400 looking like a 450. It's your tractor, if you are happy with it then that's all that matters.

Factory paint?? -- the factory white on the hood was a decal, not paint. As stated ALL of the 00 series were all red -- many were repainted red and white so that they looked like the 30-50 series.

sorry to burst your bubble but your tractor should be all red. some people even put 450 badges on 400's.
