Cub Oil Pressure too high?

My '52 Cub oil pressure gauge is consistently pegged as high as it can go. It's been this way since I bought it.

While changing the oil for the first time about 2 weeks after I bought the tractor, I drained the used oil, flushed out the filter housing aand oil pan with kerosene, took out the relief valva and spring and cleeaned them, then reinstalled the drain pan plug, the relief valve and spring, the filter housing drain pipe cap, and filled the crankcase with clean kerosene. i started her up and ran her for about 5 minutes with the kerosens, during which time the pressure was indicating at about 1/4 on the gauge.

Then I drained the kerosene, filled it up with clean 10W-30 oil and a new filter, and started her up again-the gauge is still pegged.

I noticed when I had the pressure relief valve and spring out, that the sides of the spring had a couple of very shiny areas where it had obviously been rubbing, and also that the spring was slightly bent.

What should I suspect as the culprit here? The valve? the spring?, The gauge?

And am I doing any harm by running her with the pressure pegged at the top of the gauge?

Andy

you need to make sure your gauge izz read'n corect. A $2 water pressure gauge and the hose off yer hand grease gun and maybe a 1/4 to 1/8 adapter will werk. I would replace the gauge with a new one first if I had no way to manualy check my oil pressure. I had the same problem you have and replaced the gauge thats all it needed, Replaced it with a ford 8N gauge. You kin git'em cheap

Here's a website for oil pressure gauges. Hal

I would put a calibrated gauge on it to see what the pressure is in psi. I would then check the pressure after the engine is at operating temperature at idle and full throttle. Hal

That would be my preference also.Where can I get a calibrated oil-pressure gauge without spending a small fortune?

Try NAPA auto parts or PEP Boys. Hal

Andy:

First thing that I would do is read the Blue Ribbon Service Manual for Cub's and Lo-boys - the GSS-1411. This can be found on the Cub Manual Server at www.cleancomputes.com/Cub/index.html. Then, I would be reading the Owner's Manual and then check the Parts Manual to make sure that everything is as I thought it was..

Hope this helps...

Oh, there are some interesting links on the Server Main page... browse and visit. Especially the Best of H.L. Chauvin. Humour and tech savvy combined into a light reading article that should get you chucklin whilst you work.... :-)

Rudi:

Thanks, I have read all of the manuals, and they don't really answer my question. I have not splitthe tractor to look at the oil pump, but everything else seeem sto be as it should be.

From what I can figure out, the oil pump sends oil to th emain gallery, which delivers some of that oil to the filter, some to the main beasrings, and some to the front gearcase and the pressure relief valve. Dos that sound correct to you?

I think I will take out the pressure relief valve and put it back with a weaker spring to see if that changes things.

Rudi:

I just bought a used gauge on ebay, off a Cub that supposedly worked well before it was disassembled. I will try that gauge before I do anything else.

The idea of buying an inexpensive water pressure gauge as a check also strikes me as agood one.

Thanks to all for your info; I"ll let you know how it turns out.

Slightly different opinion. I would check the oil pressure with a different gauge first.

Well if it is to high you can blow out seals. If it where my tractor I'd go to Case/IH and get some new parts for the relief valve of a kit if they have them. Bent spring could be your problem but I'd replace all of the parts to be sure.
