Steel all around?

Hi Everyone!

I was looking at pictures of old tractors and it seems like at one time there were many that were sold with steel wheels on the back and pneumatic tires on the front. Why would that be? Why wouldn't someone have ordered either full steel or full rubber...why a mix?

Thanks!

I think it was pretty commonly felt that rubber gave a smoother ride and certainly made turning easier. Remember those first generation tires were not known for their agressive tread patterns. If you look at early pictures there was very little if any tread profile so traction would be limited on wet ground. Also the conservative old farmer just couldn't buy the fact that rubber pulling tires would outlast and outpull steel. So they bought tractors that they thought would steer well, but pull well without wearing out. One good reason why steel fronts are usually much harder to find than rears for like makes!

I strongly suspect that the shockingly high price of those large rear tires gave many a marginal farmer pause until he could afford them.

Many were sold that way because of money, use of the tractor and availability. You should have been around then and you would understand better but those were some of the reasons.
