I just got done replacing the pinion shaft in my M. never touched the transmission. It now makes this growling noise when in the forward gears. does not make the noise when in reverse. what happened and should I worry about it.

i take it that you mean the bull pinion shaft, not the transmission main shaft. putting two different gears together with different wear patterns will cause a noise. whenever we redo the rearend on an 'm' i always switch the bullgears and pinions from one side to the other so they are now driving off of the back side which should be about like new.

Brad: My first question, did it growl before? I had this all out of my 560 once, if I remember correctly there are shims adjusting pinion to the crown gear. I know in truck rear ends improper pinion to crown adjustment can cause a one direction growl. This can result in excessive wear.
