Started quickly until last week, then hard to start, once started, ran well for a while and then lost power.
This week, after sitting for a week, turned over fine but would not start.
I replaced the strainer screen and casket around fuel bowl. I pulled the gas line, was not flowing well, blew it out and now flows fine, but still will not start. Any help is appreciated.

Re: IH 706 won't start --Thanks Everyone! in reply to Terry/South Dakota, 09-23-2005 15:50:59
Thank you!
Turned out to be the fuel solenoid! I appeciate all of the suggestions. Everyone was very helpful. I mostly use this tractor for keeping my lane open and in good condition, plowing snow in the winter and spreading gravel in the Spring. I live along the Missouri river by Meckling, I have owned this 706 since 1999 and this is the first problem that has ocurred.
Thanks Again!

If you're sure it's getting fuel you should check for fire from your coil wire. Pull the coil wire
from the cap and hold it within 3/16-1/4" of a good ground while someone cranks the engine with
the ignition switch on. If you have no fire there
check for battery voltage at the coil with a volt meter with the ignition switch on. If voltage is present. Replace points and condenser.
If you have good hot spark at coil wire, check for fire at your plugs by removing a plug wire and see if fire will jump from the plug wire to the plug while someone cranks the engine over with ignition switch on. Good fire, pull a plug and hook the wire to the plug and ground the plug on the engine and see if the plug fires. Plugs may need replacing if the plug doesn't fire.

A bad coil or ballast resistor will cause a no start too. Hal

First off do you have spark????? if so then i would suspect that the selenoid has done went south on ya as sometimes they will do the low power thing and then just won't open and there for no start. If ya got and old M thru 560 gasser setting around pull the fuel screw out of it and pull the selenoid out and put the screw in and open it all the way open and see if it will go .

Sounds like some of that junk got through to the carb. Remove the line from the carb and remove the brass fitting, there may or may not be a screen inside the fitting. Might just have to clean the whole carb. Another possibility is the fuel shutoff solenoid. Do you hear it clicking when you turn on the key? You can also test it by removing it and replacing it with a pipe plug, if the engine now runs, you've found the problem.
