How do you check the oil level in a Farmall A transmission? Where do you drain it, where do you fill it? How much does it hold? What weight oil do you use for the transmission?

There is a small drain plug on the bottom of the belt pulley housing also, if you have one. Also a fill plug on top of the belt pulley housing which takes 1/2 qt to pre oil those gears until the oil from the tranny gets back there. If you over fill the transmission it's more likely to leak around the seals.. Dave.

You check the lube level on the left side of the trans. There is a plug there, in front of the left rear tire, hidden behind the left side brake rod.
It takes 90wt. gear lube.
It drains at the back of the tractor, on the side of the PTO, where you will see a plug.
Hugh McKay says to get the trans full (to the check level), then add another quart. I don't disagree with that. "Good advice", says I.

Found it - Thanks. Have any idea how much it holds?

I believe it is 4 qts - five with an extra quart, I forgot to mention that the fill hole is on top of the transmission, in the bolt-on cover, next to the shifter. The plug on the side (behind the brake rod) is the "fill to level" hole. Once you get there, Hugh says add one more qt. (after closing the hole, of course.)

What about the wheel housings? They have a level in them too, right? It looks like you have to drop the pans on those to drain them.

You can suck the lube out of those if you have one of those suction tools they used on automotive differentials and other things back in the day.

Thanks y'all for your help. I checked the transmission oil and it's milky so has water in it. I think I'kk take off the transmission cover and spray it down good with diesel to flush it out, then let drain a while and refill it. I don't know where water came from, but aI just bought the tractor and it has not been worked for years, just a little parading. I hope it built up over the years. I'll keep checking to see if the problem returns.
