I have been looking for a larger tractor for my farm, and I think that I have found what I am looling for. I was hoping that you guys can give me a reality check on the price. I am not sure of the year but it has about 4000 hrs, has good paint but looks to have been repainted, no dents in the sheet metal and every thing is tight. The T/A works as it should. Tires are about 40 to 50% tread. Original top link, dual wet lines, pressed steel rear wheels. Open station with no roll bar or canopy. The engine started with no black, blue or white smoke. The manual is in the tool box. The best price I can get the tractor for is $7900. Is this too much for this tractor?

Is that price in the range you want? I am dealing on a 5000 hour 756 with a cab and all the goodies right now. Should get it for $4000. Its not a bad price for a 686 if its a deisel and in great shape, would you be better off with something older or maybe a Allis or massey with the same stats?
If you get the tractor you'll love it. I have been looking for an addition to my h and 544 for a while and after 5 months of looking finally found one I feel good about for the price.

That price seems pretty good comparing to the 686's that are on ironsearch. There are 8 listed right now with the lowest price being $6,750 and the highest price being $12,000 with an average of $9,281.25.

From researching them they have a pretty good reputation.

Seems a might high to me without knowing the year of manufacture. However, one thing sounds good - "The manual was in the tool box." If it's the original manual, it was probably well taken care of - which definitely means a lot. (My point? Try to find an original manual with any tractor you buy!!!)
A lot of older machines have the TA, but it doesn't work properly, or not at all.
Take a look at the fluids - do they look new?
I keep a log with my machinery, mostly for my own use and record fluid changes, greasing - all by dates. If they seller has a log, I'd have to think long and hard about letting that one pass - even if it seems high.

Well... It's a 686, which means it was manufactured between 1977 and 1981.

I'm assuming diesel.

If you go back for another look, give the TA a REAL test. Stomp hard on the brakes with the TA back and ahead. Drive up an incline, stop the tractor, let the clutch halfway out, and release the brakes. It should not roll back down the hill.
