Went to a neighbors and was looking to buy a H in decentr shape. I asked him if I could drive it and he obliged. Ran sweet, but when we were done I looked under the tractor and saw oil spewing out of a plate in the middle of the tractor. It looked like the plate gasket was worn and the oil was seeping out from underneath it. The neighbor said that it was a oil seal and that ignore the plate. I know without pictures nobody can be for sure but what do you guys think.

Sounds like your describing the rear cover plate behind the LIFT-ALL. This is a rectangular curved plate with dog ears on each side facing rearward. This is the access cover to the HYD pump shaft coupling. There is no seal or gasket on this plate only a felt strip on the front and rear. The source of the oil leak, if coming from this area, is the oil seals forward and aft of the shaft coupling. Part number 43509D.

It is either the transmission input shaft seal, or the transmission countershaft seal. Both of these can be replaced without splitting the tractor. The oil drip would be coming from a bit further forward if it was the engine rear seal.

...And they both can be replaced without dropping the belly pump, if it is so equipped. Larry

Thanks, I guess I still am in the dark but feel better that it may not be that bad of a fix.

My H had the same problem. When I added 5 gallons of oil to the transmission housing, 2.5 gallons leaked out through the belly plate (luckily I caught most of it in a pan). Take off the belly plate (be prepared for a lot of oil to drop out with it). The seals are around the main shaft (top one) and the countershaft (bottom one) where the shafts come out of the transmission housing. If you don't have a lift-all pump, the oil seal on the countershaft is really easy to replace. Just remove the countershaft nut (use a pipe wrench) and bearing retainer and pull off the oil seal (which fits inside the bearing retainer). The oil seal looks like a metal ring with rubber inside of it. Replacements are in stock at your local Case IH dealer, including the gaskets for the bearing retainers. The mainshaft oil seal is a little more tricky (it is a bigger version of the countershaft seal and you have to disconnect the shaft to get at it), but if I can do it, anyone can. All can be done through the belly plate. All the gaskets and oil seals are in stock at your Case IH dealer.

Hope this helps.

Go ahead and get the H. The next thing to get will be a complete set of manuals, owners, service, and parts manuals. Don't expect the manuals to be self explanatory, use them as a guide, and any questions you may have feel free to ask here. We'll walk you through it.

This is exactly what i did to get started. I have a 52 H that looks & runs great. Get the H, because if I can do it, you can. There isn't a single part that you can't find either NOS, Reproduction, or Case/IH dealer crossed and if all else fails - there are a "Ga-Jillion" salvage yards throughout the US that can get you what you need for restoration.

Yep probably a seal could be engine main or tranny. Both are pull the engine fixes I think, but not sure.
