Last winter on the last driveway snowplow of the season, my International 350U gave a massive backfire and quit working. It is time for me to take a look at it for the next long winter- but where to start. It will turn over with difficulty but seems to bind up or something. I had the pan off right off the bat and there are no parts seeming wrong. My experience is more with newer automobiles and thought - timing chain - but I know nothing about this engine. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I would bring No1 piston up the compression stroke
to TDC. You need to remove No1 plug near the radiator and feel for compression against your thumb as someone handcranks the engine. Stop cranking when piston is at TDC and the timing mark is aligned with the pointer.

Check the rotor to see where it is pointing on the cap. It should be at No1 plug wire in the cap. If this appears ok you should check the point gap and clean the points. Gap is probably .020". After this, check for fire at your sparkplugs when cranking the engine with the ignition switch on and using the starter. No fire I would replace the points and condenser and try again & check for fire. I would drain the old gas and put in fresh gas too. Still no fire I would buy a new coil. Hal PS: Check for battery voltage at your coil with ignition switch on with a lite or volt meter.

Ignition parts are all new. I pulled off the hydraulic pump and peered in. No teeth on the timing gear. I guess I know what is wrong now. Anybody know where I can get a set of gears for this tractor?

Here's a website for salvageyards in your area.
It contains 16 pages for all over the U.S. Hal

PS: Try Carter & Gruenewald at 1-800-283-2122 and your local Case/IH dealer may have them and ask for a copy from their service manual on retiming those gears correctly.
