I have an 806 that is difficult to get to go into gear. I have to move the lever up and down on occasions, several times to change from a forward gear to reverse and vis versa. I have tried adjusting the linkage under the foot plate but doesn't seem to help. Is this a syncronizer problem or linkage problem or ????? Also, sometimes at very low speeds the gear box seems to go into neutral by itself then catches again (whiplash).

on the 06 series, the top cover on the range trans gets worn after 40 some years of use, and with all the play, it does not engage the shifting forks all the way. your top cover could probably use a rebuild, we own a salvage yard and we rebuild or sell lots of parts for these. all the parts are available through hy-capacity and most salvage yards could probably help you out, darin

The 806 transmission is of the sliding-gear type, which means that there are no synchronizers to wear out. We have an 806 and it used to do what you describe. We did exactly what you did (messed with linkages) until we got it to work. It will always take a little "finesse" to get from Reverse to High, but it will get a lot better than what it is doing now. There is also more linkage behind the dashboard to adjust. The turnbuckles in there will adjust the positioning of the shifters in relation to the levers under the floorboard. I might have the exact numbers for the positioning of the linkages, if so, I will try and post them tomorrow. As to the whiplash thing. I think that is unrelated to the other problem. Ours does the same thing if the engine is idling, the TA is ahead, and if you turn the wheels too far. Your power steering is probably sluggish too, right? It will also cause the red OIL light to come on on the dashboard. It is caused by a worn out MCV pump in the clutch housing, which causes the TA clutch to slip in and out of gear until the pump catches up. It can only be fixed by rebuilding the pump and going through the Multple Control Valve. If you are like us, you will just get used to it until it gets worse. Try using lower gears with higher engine rpms and don't turn the steering to the end of its travel. I'll see if I can find anything more and post it tomorrow. Hope this helped.

Thank you. This is very helpful. I did not want to go into the transmission and after reading your observations, I don't think I need to. I did not know about the other linkage in the dash. I will take a look at all of it. I think you are right about the MCV pump as it is doing just as you described. I only notice it when I am in a turn.
