Hello Everyone. I have a problem with the front wheels on a narrow axle Farmall H. They wobble when in motion and wobble faster as speed is increased. Does anyone have any suggestions or know of where I might find a solution to the problem? Thank you . Gideon Jakubovitch, a collector of old tractors, Israel

The usual procedure is to replace the gears at the top of the upper bolster. Sometimes the horizontal gear is a full circle, sometimes half. If full you can simply turn it around. Check everything else, also, as noted by Fawteen.

That wobble is to be expected from years and years of use. It can be minimized, however, bu installing a wedge between the lower and upper bolster, where the narrow front bolts on. The wide side of the wedge in front and the narrow side in back creates a castor like condition which in essense places the front wheel axles behind the pivot point of the steering. It wont take all the wobble out, but some. To my knowlege, the wedge is 1/4 to 1/2 inch thicker in front than at the rear. YOu may have to have it custom made. Short of that, you can always rebuild the steering gear mechanism.

Most likely causes, more or less in order:

Worn out wheel bearings.

Worn spindles.

Improperly adjusted wheel bearings.

Worn bushings in steering shaft.

Too much slop in the steering gear.

On older tractor, it's probably a combination of all of the above.
