I just bought a IH 350 Utility tractor a month ago and am still trying to figure a few things out. The light switch has 3 positions, off and then it clicks to the right twice. Both of the on positions turn on the headlights and the back light at the same time. It would make more sense if it was one or the other. The back light does not have a switch on it and is wired directly to the light switch. Can anyone tell me the correct way this switch is supposed to operate?

Like you said, the first position is off, the next position to the right is supposed to be the low beam setting, and the last position is supposed to be the high beam setting. The rear light should always stay on. There should be a coil of wire on the back of the light switch to lessen the voltage going to the lights. If that were replaced with a straight wire, there would be two high beam settings.

In addition to that info, some ute's had a dual bulb rear light with a switch on it. the positions were off, clear, and red. The knob was black and had about 6 bumps around it for grip. The rear light was full on when ever the dash light switch was on (either dim, or bright).
I agree the dim resistor may have been toasted at some point. Pull off the dash sub panel and look at it.
