It appears that farmers used just about anything to fix equipment. Nails, odd screws etc. The pipe plug on the block in front of the carburator was replaced with a short branch about 3" long off a tree. It is jammed into the hole and it doesn't leak. It's been there since I've had the tractor(8 years)so I guess I'll leave it. What odd things have you found? Just curious.

Thanks
Mark

Not a tractor, but on my 1962 Comet, the engine was rebuilt by my uncle. I guess the original oil pump drive shaft was worn out, so he substituted a 1/4" allen wrench for it. It took me by suprise when I found "Craftsman 1/4" stamped into it. It is still in there and doing fine. The car has over half a million miles on it.

Ford had a lot of problems with that 1/4" hex drive for their oil pumps. I think they were being replaced with the 5/16" hex. I think it drove the distributor too. It's been a while
since I replaced one. I had a 66 Mustang with the 200cid engine and I replaced the oil pump and distributor. Oil was coming up into the distributor and I just bought a rebuilt unit and it had the 5/16 shaft. Hal
PS: A lot of people were left stranded do to those hex drives failing.

I started working on my F12 a few months ago. This tractor had set for about 30 years on my Dad's place. I found a rat's nest in the top radiator tank. In the process of getting that cleaned out I found acorn shells, lots of em all the way down in the bottom of the water jacket where the inlet pipe goes into the block. Then I fished a 5/8" vacuum hose into the water jacket of the head (Waukesha flat head), in there I found a rusty 8 penny nail and a plastic toy looked like what we used to get in Cracker Jacks in the 60s.

One time I removed the bottom of the air cleaner on my 300 Utility, and hickory nuts came pouring out. Lots of them -- it seemed like at least a quart. I assume (and hope) the squirrels had something to do with that.
