I overhauled my Super A this spring, it has the same engine as the B & C. I took the head in and had it baked out, shot peened, and milled .015". They put in all new valves, seats, guides & shimmed the springs. They re-contoured the rocker too, where the valve stems wore into them. The head looked like brand new. I took out the original 1948 3" flat top cast iron pistons & sleeves. The rebuilder rounded up Clevite 3-1/8" aluminum high compression pistons & sleeves, and fitted new wrist pins. I replaced the rod bearings with Std. size, after checking out the crank. The mains were original, but had very little wear. The crank journals all looked good near as I could tell, so I replaced the bearings with Std. size also. I rebuilt the oil pump, flushed the sludge out of the block, and slapped it all together with a new gasket set. It got a real work out mowing fields & lawns this summer with the Woods L-59. We had some really tall, course, wet grass this summer. Before the re-build, it would smoke and bog down in the heavy stuff (I mow wide open in 3rd) Now it just keeps right on pulling, and will slip the mower belt if it plugs up with grass. Has a lot more power now, and starts better, no smoke either. I gained some hourse power for sure, but now sure how much.

The engine is easier to work on if you pull the engine and have it sitting on an engine stand or bench. Also when it is nice and clean it's nicer to work on and you can prime and paint it. Hal

In addition to the other things suggested, if you remove the engine, also check the condition of the flywheel ring gear. Replace if necessary.

I would do all the things these guys are telling you. Do it right and you have no worries. One trick on the sleeves, drop them in the freezer overnight and they will be easier to install unless your gonna send it to a repair shop and have the rebuild done.

These are wet sleeves and are not pressed in like
the dry sleeves used the H's and M's. Hal
PS: Just need to coat the lip of sleeve with dish detergent.

Hi Hal, I like o-ring grease myself, can get it at any pool supply place, a little pricey but the o-rings like it.

Mine never complained of the dish detergent, IH
recommended it. No leaks either. Hal

I forgot to tell you that you can install a 3.250"
sleeve kit in that engine. Cost about $350.00. Hal

You can install an oversize sleeve and piston kit
in that engine. Those sleeves are wet sleeves and are sealed at the bottom of the sleeves and the block. I think you should pull the engine
and completely disassemble the engine and have block degreased, crankshaft measured for wear to determine if undersize bearings are needed. The block area where your sleeves are installed needs
to be cleaned of all rust and dirt so your new sleeve seals do not leak. You do not want to pull the engine apart again for coolant leakage.

You can also replace your clutch at this time too.
Oil passages need to be cleaned of any sludge. I haven't covered everything, but you should put some thought it this and do it right. Hal

Good sleeves and pistons 3 1/8 kits can be found starting at 315.00. You should pull the crank and have it ground if needed before new bearings. New bearings on a bad crank will just be trouble later unless just for riding around, parades and fun. You should just plastigage the present bearings first.
