Fellows, I am new to this old tractor madness. I bought a 140 Farmall the other day and I want to go ahead and put a new set of rears on it. It has now some (very worn and cracked) 9 - 24's, but I have noticed a lot of others have 11.2 - 24's, some even bigger than that. This tractor will be used primarily for a good size garden or pulling a finish mower. What is the best size rear tire for these purposes? And, where is the best place to order tires? Thanks in advance.

I like the 11.2x24"s. I have them on both a SA and a B and the are great. I plow with the SA and play around pulling with both of them and they give a little better top end speed.

Mike: I have 3 different sizes on my tractors. My Super A has 9.5x24 with 5.00x15 on front, 140 has 11.2x24 rear and 5.00x15 front. In both cases those were standard or most common tire used when those tractors were new. I have 12.4x24 rear with 6.00x16 front on my 130. It had 11.2 when new. I can't see these affect speed very much. If you go to 12.4x24 the larger front tires are almost a must, or tractor sits noticably low on front. I don't think I will ever change Super A from what it has now. The larger tire will give better floatation. In the beginning I was afraid 12.4 would noticably affect power. I don't notice much difference.

I have an S tine, 17 shank field cultivator for one point fast hitch. If one lets that cultivator go too deep it will stop any of these little offsets. I will say the 12.4x24 tires have a definate advantage when pulling the cultivator. Plowing with 2x12 plow is the same.

I have an A and a Super A, both with 9.5x24's on them (the "new" numbering system equivalant of the 9x24's) and they do fine. We plow snow, run the dirt plow, drag, disk, cultivate, and other misc uses. At times the 11.2x24's would be handy, but for general purpose I find the 9.5's to work pretty well. Just be careful of the mud, they do dig down quick. If you want to go really big, I had some 14x24's ("new" numbering I think they are 16.9x24's) on the Super A, on the correct rims for the large size, but, as mentioned, it really sped up the tractor and i did lose a little power. But I had no problem's getting stuck, the darn thing just floated. Hopefully others, such as Dave BN, can help with where to get them. Depends on if you want new or you may get lucky and find a good set of used tires. Good luck and have fun.

the 11.2x24 replaced the 10x24 and I don't believe there is any direct replacement for the 9x24 so you will have to go with the 11.2, a bit faster and more traction, the speed will hardly be noticably on that small a tire

9-24 was replaced by 9.5-24 -- The tires are identical.

I have 11.2X24 on my BN and wish I'd gotten smaller tires instead. The bigger tires make the tractor too fast in low gear and reduce power also. I get my tires from my local dealer. They are a good shop and provide service for farm and over the road trucks. A good dealer should be able to find what ever you want. Or you can go to millertire.com. PS my new 11.2X36's for my C get put on Friday. Dave.
