H - Distillate Manifold Exhaust Question

I want to get back to this distillate manifold – I previously asked if I need a new carb if I change to a gas – and the question is no, however I was asked why I was changing if I did not have too --- anwser as follows:

I am getting a little tired of the exhaust in my face;

If I do find the pipe that is bolted to the exhaust (distillate) manifold, OEM part number 6713D Pipe, Exhaust (mine is broken and I have a call into Marks) and now the question:

Will I be able to fit a muffler to this setup – or a least get the exhaust out of my face any suggestions will certainly make my time on the H a happier one

Chris, I can offer you my experience with H manifolds, but the decision is yours. I have two H's, both distillate set ups(1944). I messed with one, got the manifold welded and repairs made, planed to fit tight, new gaskets and muffler. When I was done everything worked well, but I never got the baffle in the distillate manifold unsiezed, it sat mostly open and so I left it. The other H had a real badly cracked manifold so I bought a new one( not a distillate). The new manifold bolted on easily, gives better distribution and a better running tractor. If I had it to do again I would buy a new manifold before messing with the old. Both these H's earn their keep around the farm, rake, run auger or elevator. Both run great on gasoline, never had to mess with the carb other than set up. In my opinion a new manifold will make a tractor run much better, there is no rust and corrosion inside and you get a better flow of fuel mixture and a better distribution to each cylinder, there are no pin holes or air leaks, no weld globs inside to restrict or change flow. I think it cost me $160 Canadian for the manifold and it was worth every penny. I am talking about replacing manifolds that are cracked, broken out, rusted and corroded on the inside, warped, welded etc. I am not advocating new manifolds for a tractor with a decent manifold on it, but I will never waste time and money trying to fix a manifold whose day is done. Chris,
I have a friend with a distillate H manifold. I know the manifold is rotted out, not sure about the pipe.
Shoot me an e mail, and the next time I'm at his place I will have a look.

You can' use a gas carb for distillate operation but you must change the metering nozzle.

Yes, a standard H muffler will fit the exhaust pipe from a distillate manifold - assuming of course that you didn't change the exhaust pipe size following the repair. The bigger headache in my opinion would be getting the broken pipe out and chasing the threads for the replacement pipe. I put a generous coat of never-sieze on my replacement exhaust pipe threads. I don't know if it will let me remove the pipe eaiser in the future, but hopefully I won't have to find out.
