Should I or shouldnt I (kinda long)

I changed the oil in the H on Sunday and found the oil milky white and some antifreeze come out first. This tractor has been sitting around for long periods of time since the end of March. It has not been worked much since then. I have been rehabbing a house all summer and am now finished and giving full time to getting my tractor to earn its keep. I found the following statement in the articles on this site and it states:

"A milky white color indicates excessive moisture in the engine. This can either result from a coolant leak into the oil or can be attributed to frequent on/off operation in colder or humid climates without letting the engine come up to a normal operating temperature for an extended period of time."

I changed the the oil and checked the antifreeze and I added a little over a gallon. I went back out today and started it. The antifreeze was still full and the checking the oil drain plug I let a little oil drain out and the oil looked normal.

Should I go ahead and tear into this and replace the head gasket or should I wait and see if this occurs again. I dont want to ruin the engine or have the antifreeze eat up the bearings but I really dont think I have a problem. But I am not an expert on tractors or engines. Thanks for your responses.

I had a M that did the same thing and I put the stop leak in it for working through the summer. But I sold it as it started smoking oil in the fall and I knew something was wrong. Main thing is watch the oil & temp gauge while working it. If it starts smoking you got a head problem and if the tractor set up any without being used that's likely to happen. Also consider half quart of oil in the gas tank or two cycle oil as these tractors were made to run on leaded gas which had more oil in it, don't over do it though. LOL

BAR'S LEAK Radiator Stop Leak -- all on front of brown plastic bottle. You will have to read labels as Bar's has several products.

Thanks Gene. I will try that first and keep an eye on both the oil and antifreeze. I will give it a good workout this weekend.

There are some very good block and head gasket sealers available at the autoparts store. Purchase one that is compatable with antifreeze. Follow directions on the can.

Basically you add the contents to an operating, warmed up engine and operate for 30 minutes. I have had good experience with one of the Bars products.

Gene, I have the same problem on my M as it seems to leak a few tablespoons of anti-freeze over the course of a year. I've had the tractor a little over a year and first noticed the anti-freeze when I cahanged the oil after getting it home. I've been keeping an eye on it by opening the drain plug and letting it seep out over night. I retorqued the head to 110 ft-lbs. (factory spec.) and got a 1/4 turn on several of the nuts. Don't know if that took care of it yet or not. I purchased a couple of bottles of "Bar's Leaks Radiator Stop Leak and Conditioner" yesterday. It states on the container treats up to 4 gals. The M system is a 6 gal. system and was going to put two 10 oz. bottles in it. Does all of this sound right and thought I would take it for a good drive of maybe up to an hour to really warm it up.

I'll be watching for your posts relative to this matter as it appears you are a person that has "been there - done that". Where are you located in Missouri as I live up near Rolla south of I-44? Have a good one and thanks for any information you can provide. Hal

I will stop by the auto parts store and get the exact name of the product. I have used it twice with excellent results. Once on a Chev 305 with either a cracked head or leaking head gasket between cylinders. That has been 3 years ago and it's still holding. 2nd time on an Allis Chalmers with a water jacket seap.

Gene.

My self I'd run it but also keep a close eye on the anti freeze and oil. May have been a seep that with running has cleared up on its own. Some times a little running does wonders to seals etc.

Could also only leak when warm and not when cold

I second that sentiment.
