Oil Pan Leak

1944 Farmall M. Well, put the pan back on and noticed that the center bolt would not tighten up. Naturally I now have a leak at this bolt location.

The bolt that had been there when I took it out was shimmed up with some extra washers. I believe this had been a problem prior to my messing it up futher.

Any suggestions for a good repair? Had thought about making this bolt hole one size larger. There is not much to drill out and tap at this location. The rest of the bolts are positioned in the block.

Can you use a shorter bolt? If you have 3 or 4 threads you could cut a bolt off to fit. A little loc-tite and a lock washer?

Quite possibly someone broke off the bolt for that location at some point in time, and part of it is still in the hole. Could be quite a trick to get it out. Might also be some dirt or crud in the hole, preventing the new bolt from going all the way in. You might try poking a small screwdriver or pick into the hole and see if you can dislodge whatever is in there, or just shim up the bolt and be happy.

You can certainly go to the next size of bolt. I can't imagine anyone torquing a pan bolt so tight that it would strip it. You can also install a heli-coil if you need the bolt to be original for show
