While I'm figuring my way through phosphoric acids and epoxy primers, I'm also preparing to derust and undercoat the old truck. I'd imagine a few of you are no stranger to that task. What undercoatings have folks had success with? Initially, the steps I'm thinking of are twisted wire brushing, phosphoric acid, epoxy primer, enamel, NAPA asphalt undercoating. Is this overkill?

HI DAVE, I have worked in autobody shops in the past and my brother owns his own body shop. And yes used oil is the best way to go. I use a campbell hausfeild sand blaster you know one of the ten dollar ones you siphone right out of a windshield washer jug filled with oil. And get everywhere. And let her drip for a day or two where it can sit without hurting anything below . Undercoats trap bad stuff you can however mix a little undercoating with the oil to help it stick if you like I have a 88 chevey truck that I try to oil every Fall. So Far so good. I brother recomends this with brand new vehicles as well. Here in the salt city area vehicles just dont last to long with out help. JON

While we're on the subject, how do you get into deep body panel cavities? I'm imagining something like a wand sprayer - is that what you use? Thanks for the info.

I have done what you are doing many times and now have a better method. Prime and paint it(with good paint with hardner) let it set up real good then either spray or brush it with used engine oil. The problem I found is that unless you take it all apart and prime/undercoat/paint behind parts, rust will be in there and the undercoating traps it. The oil will kind of seep behind the parts. My cousin has a 83 Chevy wagon, 200,000+ miles, never garaged with no rust. The only bad part, you have to oil it a few years in a row to get it to kind of mix with the road dirt and make a good layer and it is the DIRTYIST job you can ever do!!! But it works real good!!!

Thanks John. After doing a little more research, I'm starting to think the undercoating winds up trapping more salt than it repels - especially if you don't keep up with it. Well, the basics of a a good phosphoric aciding and epoxy primer will get me started. I've heard/read of the oil treatment. Sounds like a strong possiblity. Let's not forget the October Zagray show.

Try SEM brand undercoat. Its the best I've ever used. The stuff dries hard, and is nearly indestructible.I've not seen another that works anything like it.
