Can"t get the M started. The starter is just dead. The battery has good juice. It had been hesitating periodically for about the last 6 months, now it is just dead. If I hook power to it out when removed, it will spin it. Not sure what the problem is with it.

Pay special attention to the brush cable that goes to ground. If this connection is not good, the brush will ground through the spring, the spring gets hot and pretty soon it"s not a spring anymore, just a piece of coiled wire.

Sounds like a simple fix, get your self a set of brushes and spring, clean the commutator, take a hacksaw blade clean the mica out of the commutator, put a little grease on the bushings on both ends of starter, put back together, problem should be solved. This is a common six volt problem when your starter does not turn or turns slow.

Had a similar problem a few weeks ago with mine; just nothing after putting fuel in it at the tank. Battery was fine but starter did nothing. Took it off (easy job) and went to the starter and generator shop in town. He quickly determined the brush springs had lost their compression at age 54 (mine is a 1951). $15 later and 10 minutes to reinstall it has been perfect ever since. Hope this helps and yours is this simple. Hal

Thanks

What size battery cables are you using and is this still the 6 volt system? You need heavy battery cables if still using the 6 volt system
do to the heavy amperage draw. Clean all battery posts and cable terminals nice and shiny.
Clean the area where your battery is being grounded and see if this solves the cranking problem. Hal

Thanks Hal. I used 1 gauge on the cable to the starter. Its a postive ground 6 Volt system the cable to the frame (positive ground) is only about 3 inches -- i have the old one there, because I could not find a new one that short. Maybe I should use a new 1 gauge that is 8 inches long?

Thanks
Mark

Here are a few websites for battery cables. I agree with Farmallhal on using soldered terminals
instead of crimping them. Hal

Take your old cable to a NAPA or other good auto parts store or to a truck service center and have new cables made from the heavy cable with the correct terminals. The terminal lugs should be soldered for the best contact. Not good to use an excess length cable. There are numerous places where OEM cables can be purchased already made up. The Brillman Co. is one at 1-888-274-5562. Pilot Knob Restorations also have them at 815-777-0826. Another trick I use is to place an external star lock washer between the terminal and the contact surface. Those little star teeth bite into both surfaces for an improved contact. Hope this helps. Hal

Once in a while on my W6 I have to loosen the bolt on the grounding cable, give it a wiggle, retighten the bolt and away she goes. Everything on a 6 volt system has to be perfect, or she won't start.

Sounds like I need new brushes and a spring. Actually is a Super MTA. This one is a 12 volt. Thanks.
