I need guidance!!! A 444 showed up in my yard whose owner works with my daughter. (Apparently I can fix anything.) The hydraulics work for all the other functions but the 3 point won't go up. Where do I Start? He bought the tractor and the 3 pt never worked and he didn't need it because he bought it for a loader tractor. He changed the top cover and I don't know if he changed it out with the correct one. Is there a casting number for me to check 1st? Are these known to develope internal cracks in the castings? Help!!!!! !
Mark

Hi Mark, B414, 434, 444, and 384 had a shut off valve at the front of the seat. There are two valves on the casting at the front of the seat.
One controls the flow rate to the 3pt and the other controls where the hydraulic oil flows.
In ON position the oil flows to 3pt and in OFF it flows to remote outlet or some people have plumbed the loader into the remote outlet and unfortunately then you can either use the loader and not the 3 pt and the other position the 3pt will work but the loader will not. I may have the ON and OFF positioned reversed as it has been 15 years since I worked on one.
The other thing make sure the draft control level is set to HEAVY. That is the small hydraulic lever pushed forward.

Hope this helps

I saw the two knobs and the one looked like a flow control setting. I will investigate the other knob on the left side of the seat and then I will unhook the loader hydraulic lines and see what happens.
Thanks for the help, it's a step in the right direction. Mark

Hi Mark, you should not have to unhook the loader hydraulics, to be safe lower the bucket on the ground and then turn the ON/OFF valve until it limits in one direction and then try 3pt. You should be able to lift the loader to 2 or 3 ft off the ground turn the ON/OFF valve in the other direction and the loader should stay at that height unless the loader hydraulics have a leak. The same is true of 3 pt should be able to raise it to desired height then turn the valve to activate the loader and 3 pt should stay there. Neighbour had a remote on his 434 and procedure to use remote was to riase the 3pt UP/DOWN level until it was in the 1/2 way position and then turn the valve to shut off the 3pt and then the 3pt UP/DOWN lever could be used to control the remote cylinder. Some farmers used this as a cheap hookup for a loader with a mechanical trip bucket. Proper hookup for loader with hydraulic bucket is to divert the high pressure (small)line from the hydraulic pump through a set of control valves and then back into the high pressure line at the front of the seat. Then add a dump line with a T into the filler plug at the back of the seat.

I talked to the owner of the tractor tonight to get some info and history. It appears that he was plowing and the plow jumped up and the 3 point stuck in the raised position. A friend of his took the top casting into the dealer and he replaced some parts but it still doesn't work. There is good pressure and flow but the oil is lost at that point. I am going to pull the on/off control body off and look for a blown "O" ring. He told me to keep it at $400.00. That's where I will stop.

Hi Mark, usually when the 3pt would jump up to the top it was because the depth control lever was not far enough down to the heavy position.

The other thing to check is the spring behind the top link connection. If this spring breaks or the bolt unscrews then the draft control sensing goes crazy. Make sure the draft control sensor is sticking out of the casting about 3/4".
The draft control sensor is a chrome plated rod that sticks out of the hydraulic casting by the right side of the top link bolt.

Good luck

The sensing piston? is sticking out about 2 1/2". There is nothing hanging on the 3 point now and it is all the way down. Mark

To clarify, the owner weas plowing and hit something hard and the plow jumped up. Apparently jamming something or even breaking or distorting something. I checked the draft control rods by the 3rd link and everything seems in order however, with the tractor running, I feel no resistance when I move the casting where the 3rd link hooks up. Shouild I feel some resistance against the verticle piston plunger thingy? It moves about a 1/2" when it comes up against the verticle plunger. I am guessing that the horizantol plunger on the left side is the depth control and that is free and moves in and out with the depth control lever.

Hi Mark, from your description draft control sensing would appear OK. So all the simple things have been checked. I would check the archives as about a year ago someone had a problem with a B275 or B414 hydraulic system and he went into great detial on the repair.

Please let us know the fix.

Good luck

I will let you know what I find out although I have checked the archives I found nothing of help. Thanks for your help so far.
Mark
