806 wide front conversion...Farmall vs. IH

New to the board, just bought a '64 Farmall 806 and eventually want to convert from the 2-wheel tricycle to a wide front. I've searched previous posts and it sounds like it's a direct swap, but after reviewing the owner's manual I'm a little confused. It shows a "Farmall" with the trike front and an "International" with a wide front. The trike front is operated by a steering box above the front end but the IH has a long hydraulic actuator located way back on the right side of the tractor.

My questions are: 1.) was the front end the only difference between Farmalls and IHs in '64? 2.)Are there different wide front ends that get actuated from different locations depending on the model? Thanks in advance.

What Chadd means is the International wide front will not fit your Farmall, so you need the wide front shown on the tractor in the top picture. There were about 39000 Farmall 806's produced, vs about 8300 Internationals.

The International 806 is a different model of 806 than the Farmall. The International was designed for industrial/heavy pulling/low ground clearance work. Because it couldn't have a narrow front, it used an external hydraulic cylinder by the front axle. All International 806's had to have a wide front end, although some were adjustable width and others weren't. They came standard with single hydraulics, a swinging drawbar, and lights mounted in the grill. The Farmall came standard with the tricycle front end with the hydraulic cylinder built into the front casting because an external cylinder wouldn't work. It was taller (used taller rear wheels) and was designed for cultivating and working crops that were taller. It also came standard with dual hydraulics, lights mounted on the sides of the fuel tank cowling and fast hitch, although these options could have been deleted by the purchaser to make the tractor cheaper. The wide front end used on a Farmall 806 had adjustable width and was designed to use the steering system of the tricycle front. Pictures of each are shown below. The top one is our '64 Farmall 806 with the IH front end.

Thanks for the input chadd! You say yours above is a Farmall with a "IH" front. Do you mean the one off the industrial model or the trike-compatible model? Sorry I'm not familiar enough to tell from the pic since I can't see the right side.

Was one model (Farmall or IH) more popular than the other? The reason I ask is I find it odd that noone mentions it in the threads on wf conversions. It seems it's always "any 706, 806, 856, etc. wf will bolt right up", like there's only one type to discuss.

Barry, sounds like you're still a little confused. First off, when comparing the Standard tread model (lower picture) to the Row-Crop model (upper picture), forget the term "IH". They're both IH's. Call the Standard tread model "International" and call the Row-Crop "Farmall". This gets a little confusing because some people refer to all tractors made by IH as "International", and some of the later Row-Crops only said "International" on the decals. Just make sure to always specify that your tractor is a Row-Crop. Okay, now, as to which wide front you need, you need one off of a Farmall Row-Crop tractor, like in Chadd's top picture. Wide fronts from 560, 706, 806, 1206, 544, 656, 756, 1256, 1456, 826, 1026, 666, and 686 Farmall Row-Crops will bolt up. You can pretty much not worry about ending up with a wide front off of a International standard tread model, because they are by far outnumbered by Row-Crops. Just tell the salvage yard what you're doing and they'll know what you need.

Only difference is when you got to the 1206,1256,1456 they had 8 bolt wheels instead of 6 bolt. These fronts all interchanged even to the 656.

Thanks guys, the fog's starting to clear. The whole IH, International, Farmall thing has been confusing me for awhile, especially since the later model row-crops were badged as International.

The last Standard-Tread IH tractors were the "white stripe" 66 series through 1975. Even though both had large INTERNATIONAL emblems/decals on the side of the hood, Farmalls, Row-Crops, still said FARMALL down by the model number.

After that, all tractors manufactured by IH were Row-Crops, Farmalls. There was simply no point to making Standard-Tread or Wheatland tractors any more. There was little to no demand for them. The row crops could do the same jobs just as well, and modern weather-tight cabs eliminated the need for the wide fenders to keep dust out of the operator's platform.
