Transmission on a 444

I have a simple question... recently purchased a 444 with a loader. The hydralics use the transmission fluid from the 444. Do I need a special trans hydralic fluid for this, or do I use a common 90 weight transmission fluid. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Yes the 444 has its hyd reservoir under the seat with the filler plug to the rear.Make sure your loader & 3 point arms are down before filling.DO NOT lower your arms with the filler plug out as you will be coverd wih oil very quickly.Been there done that. MJ

I believe the 444 has a separate reservoir for the hyd fluid -- fill plug is behind the seat.

CNKS is correct B414,434,444,384 had separate hydraulic reservoir under the seat and filler plug was behind the seat. Use Hytran in hydraulics.

The transmission used 90wt or in cold weather climate a lighter grade. Transmission would be really difficult to shift at -25F with 90wt.

I believe transmission filler plug was by gear shift and there was a level plug on the side of transmission but maybe wrong as it has been 15 years since last 384.

Hope this helps

Never, ever use 90-weight gear lube in a tractor where the hydraulics suck the rear end oil. It is recommended by the factory that IH Hy-Tran or equivalent oil be used in the rear end of all IH tractors that use a common rear end/hydraulic reservoir arrangement. With IH equipment, it is a good idea to use the Hy-Tran that you buy from your nearest Case IH dealer (it is a little pricey). The pumps are very sensitive to the oil that they are pumping, and I think that oil is a lot cheaper than replacing three hydraulic pumps. Have fun with your 444, they are great utility tractors with a loader on them.
