I moved back to the country and the widow next door sold me her late husband's Farmall Super A -- giving me no information about it. "SAm in NS" (and others) deciphered that I "have a 1948 Super A with a 1952 Super C motor.... the serial number corresponds to a late 1952 Super C. This also matches up with your block casting date. So you probably have the C-123 engine as opposed to the C-113 engine that was in most Super A's."

The previous owner had mentioned something about the engine being rebuilt but I didn't catch the details. My brother removed the valve cover and assured me the engine had not run 3 hours since it had been reworked -- although the tractor was said to have been parked out in the open for as much as 4 1/2 years (with the exhaust covered).

What type and viscosity, etc., of oil should I use in this engine knowing it will be operated in north central Texas in temperatures between 30 and 105 degrees F? (I don't know an operator who will work outside that temp. range.)

Thanks in advance.
Dan K

If the oil pressure gage is working use one that gives good oil presure at working temp. I use 30W in one and 40 W in the other. When its cold the 40W seems a bit thick so I warm it up slow or use the other tractor with the 30w. Mine didn't run enough pressure with the multigrades but your engine might be tighter.

15W40 diesel oil, 30W Diesel is OK, but at 30 degree F operation I would go for the 15W40.

Any good quality engine oil will be fine, as long as you pick something and stick with it. Even 10W30 or 10W40.

Case IH Low Ash SAE30 is what we use up here in the summer months. Should be good year 'round in Texas.

We run Diesel SAE-30 in our M, W6, and 2500A. Because the oil is designed for diesels, it has more detergents in it to help clean up the inside of the motor. Be careful running detergent oil in an engine that has sat for a long period or never run detergent oil before. The oil will break loose chunks of sludge from the inside of the engine that could plug up oil passages and cause parts of the engine to starve for oil. If you don't know about what it ran before, add mostly non-detergent oil with a small amount of detergent oil and add more detergent oil each oil change until you are running all detergent oil.

The Super A's had the C123 block from S/N 310300-
356001 with thicker sleeves and after SN 356001
had the C123 engine with the water pump. Hal

I'd run a 30W or 40W in it. I run 40W in most of my tractors in the summer.
