Just got done fighting this battle on my "A". Don't know if yours is similar, but here goes. The field post on the generator (on my tractor the one nearest the engine block on the generator)went to the field post on the regulator which was the terminal farthest to the left when the terminals were facing away from you (I mention all this because on my old one there was no indication at all as to which terminal was which and figure you might be in the same situation). Wire to the positive side of the anmeter went to the "bat" post on the regulator (middle one on mine). Wire to the lights went to the "L" (load) terminal on the regulator (one on the right when facing away from you). The armature "A" wire from the generator went to a terminal on the underside of the regulator. The ignition switch wire went from the distributor/mag setup straight up to the switch without interruption. The positive side of the anmeter was connected to a wire from the positive side of the battery by way of the switch on the starter. I cleaned and regrounded everything, polished the commutator to bright with crocus cloth, my brushes were fine but had to free up the springs a bit, AND the big thing, as per Nebraska Cowman, I shorted a wire from generator field post to a good ground and then she started working great and has every since. Don't know if that helps or not with yours, but good luck with it.
Stan
