My M quit the other day while I was mowing. I thought I had run out of gas. When I started it,I had to boost it because the battery was dead, the wire from the alternator to the battery was smoking and the insulation was melting. Any help to find the cause is appreciated.

Sounds like you have a very bad short some where. Or the altenator has gone bad and is over chargeing alot

The short, mentioned by Old, may be the alternator diodes. If they went bad, or the main (big) terminal is ahorted to ground, the wire will smoke. Check as follows:
Disconnect battery (one terminal will do, and move it so it can't accidently go back and touch the post).
Disconnect the alternator Big terminal. use an ohm meter set on RX1 and check between alternator frame (shiny spot), and the big terminal on the alt. (not the wire). If there is no resistance (the meter reads nearly zero) the diodes are toast or the wires are shorted.
I always use a fusable link (available from NAPA or others) that is rated at 5 amps more than the alternator. The fusable link should be exposed to air (not taped up in a loom) and connected inline in the wire going from the amp meter to the battery cable. This prevents smoke!!!
The amp meter must be rated for more current than the alternator can make!! Max reading of 50+ for a 45 amp alt.
Good hunting, let the forum know the outcome.
