What are you guys using for carb cleaner. Years ago I used a cleaner that came in a steel bucket, with a basket inside. That stuff was so potent that if you got a little on your hand it would take off your fingerprints. I bought some cleaner to soak carbs in the other day and it's not much different than diesel fuel or parts cleaner. Has EPA condemnd all the GOOD stuff, or is there a real strong soaking solution out there somewhere?

The only good carb cleaner is one that contains Methylene Chloride. Do not buy it if it doesn"t contain. Berrymans and Napa both have it and yes it is the same stuff that was around years ago. It is pricey pricey though... You will pay at least $70 for a 6 gal pail. It should have a layer of oil on the top to keep the cleaner from evaporating and if you are going to keep it for any length of time, you should add some oil to it. Also, the Methylene Chloride is nasty and will eat the rubber or plastic parts out of your carb, so make sure they are out or don"t use it on a carb where you can"t remove the plastic...oh and by the way.....wear protective gloves....

Have been using Berrymans, not as good as the old stuff, but does a fair job.

We used a pail of carburetor cleaner that had a basket in it and it was potent too. We bought it through the local auto parts store in town.
I doubt if it's available anymore. It even ate through the metal can and ran out on the shop floor. Sure smelled bad too, but did a good job cleaning. Hal

Had the same issue a few weeks ago. Finally found the good stuff in the pail with the basket at NAPA. $41, ouch.

Yes it's still available. Don't forget you can keep reusing the stuff until it is so diluted from oil grease dirt and whatever that it becomes unaffective. If you do some precleaning (knock of grease and dirt)to the exposed parts it can last through several little projects. When it gets real dirty or diluted I fill the little basket with original nuts and bolts I am saving to get them clean before finaly disposing of the liquid. The paint reclamation area at our local land fill takes the stuff as long as it's well sealed.
