I'm thinking about going to look at a 444 diesel. Are these good tractors? What should I be looking for?
Thanks, Kevin

Be sure the check that you have both the specified free play at the top of the (two-stage) clutch travel AND enough at the bottom of the travel to completely stop the PTO. Good tractors, though clutches were not their strongest point.

The 444 followed the 424 and is similar. A very good utility tractor around 40 HP. I once owned a 424 gasoline. On the 424, power steering was an option and I suppose as well was on the 444. The PS would be a definite plus. I did have some problems with the 3 point lift on my 424. The lift got to where it would not stay up or pick up much. A new piston was required for the lift cylinder which is inside the lift unit case under the seat. These tractors have a separate reservoir and do not use the transmission fluid for the hydraulics. A plus is that the older Mahindra tractors are almost direct copies of the 424/444 and many parts interchange. When the lift on my 424 needed repair, a Mahindra piston was used for the repair at about 1/2 the cost of the IH part. I never had much other problems. The tractor was very dependable.
