I have a left back axle seal that is leaking a little fluid. Has anyone used anything like Bars Leak to stop this. I also have a leaky seal around where the belt pulley bolts on. Would this work there too? This would be on a 39 H. Thanks.

Did the axle seals on a 46 H this past summer. Not a problem. Hardest part was thinking about it. The good peopl;e of this forum have addressed the other seal and others. jUST DO A SEARCH AND YOU WILL probably find a step by step "how To" post. I strongly recommend getting a good manual. I ordered the operating manual and the sevice manual from the link on this site and it was cheap and great quality.

Is the belt pulley shaft seal leaking, or is it the flange that bolts to the housing which holds the seal? There is no gasket under that flange, only shims to set the gear lash. Thus everything must be really clean when assembled or the flange will leak. To replace the shaft seal, the assembly with the flange on the shaft must be pulled out. There are two bearings and a gear that must be removed from the shaft to replace the seal. You'll likely need access to a shop press to get it apart. For the rear axle seal, as others said, best to replace it which means removing the wheel from the axle. After that it' pretty straight forward as the seal is in holder which just unbolts and slides off the axle. Axle will need to be really clean when installing the new seal to avoid damage as it slides on over the axle. If the bearing has play in it, or there is a groove worn in the shaft, the new seal may not stop your leak.

The seals are probably original Leather based seals not modern rubber. No stop leak will swell up worn out leather.

I wouldn"t use Bars Leak again on a bet! I used it years ago in my F12 radiator thinking it would seal a water jacket leak in the head. It didn"t stop the leak. What it did do was gum up the cooling system.

In case you"ve never used the stuff it consists of about 70% syrup and 30% pellets about the size of rabbit feed pellets. The pellets melt and stick to anything they come into contact with. I"m not sure they make it for the application you"re talking about, but I still wouldn"t use it.

I"m not sure what the H uses for an axle seal but I would suggest replacing what belongs there, same with the flang gasket for the belt pulley.
