A couple of Super C questions

My Super C has a rather neat top on the air intake tube. It's not the plain mushroom cap, nor is it the Ball jar cap. Rather it has a clear plastic cylinder that collects the dust inside. The bottom of the cap has fins to centrifugally separate the dust and the top is removable. Problem is, with 50+ years of heat and sunshine, the plastic is distorted badly and isn't clear anymore. Does anybody refurbish these or offer reproductions?

Secondly, how difficult is it usually to get the front crank pulley off? Is it simply pressed on with a key? Looks like the front support would have to come off!

Use a bearing seperator to get behind the pully, you will need to remove the water pump. You need a good puller with a 3/4 diameter screw. Get the screw as tight as you dare then maybe a little more. If it hasn't budged use a torch to heat the pully. You'll hear it pop. Comes off easy after that. Craig

One can use a bearing separator and a 2 jaw puller to get the pulley off. DO NOT TRY it without the bearing separator or the pulling device using the hydraulic jack.

The damper pulley is a press fit and may have a set screw or a bolt in the end of the crankshaft.
You will need a good puller. Hal

I would be very careful with a puller - I couldn't get one to fit properly, and was afraid that i would break the pulley. Finally resorted to drilling two holes in pulley, across from each other in the space between the hub and the V, and then fabricating a puller out of two bolts, and a strap of 1/2" by 3" steel. Put a large socket on the crank shaft, tightened the bolts, and it walked right off. If I remember right I used an impact wrench very gingerly to tighten the bolts.

Here's a website for a damper puller using a hydraulic jack or ram. It was desiged for a Cub,
but could be modified for a Super C damper. Hal

I see my Super C has the same size/thread hole in the end of the crank as the Cub - 1/2" NC. Is that big enough to push a new pulley on? If not, how in the world does one ever get a new one on? Do you happen to know, are new pulleys available from Case-IH?

I'm not so concerned about breaking mine, so long as I have a replacement in hand, as mine already has one ear of the crank slot broken out.

To reinstall your damper pulley you need to heat it. Place in an oven at about 200 degrees for an hour or so and using heavy gloves reinstall it
on the crankshft. Use a heavy rawhide hammer to smack it. If that damper you're pulling has a groove worn into the hub you need to replace the seal in the timing gear cover. Oil leakage can
occur here.

You can check with Case/IH for a new damper, but I doubt if they still have any. You can probably
find a good used damper. Here's a website for
salvage yards. Hal
