I'm considering buying an undermount mower for this tractor. Woods Equipment representative recommends a 42" and says tractor is a little underpowered for their 59" unit. Is the tractor HP sufficient for the larger mower? Also, they claim to have fittings for a FAST HITCH for this model. As I inherited this tractor, I'm not sure the difference between regular attachment and FAST HITCH. Please advise on experiences on both subjects. Also, is there another mfg of belly mowers for this tractor. Are any good used ones available in the SE (South Carolina)? Thanks, Tim

If you have a 75', then yours makes more horses than most Cubs. If your engine is in good condition and the mower is properly adjusted it will easily handle the larger of the two decks.

Actually, I would say that there are just as many Cubs out there with the 42" mower as there are with the 59" mower, maybe more.

In general, a Cub is adequate for the 59" mower, but it does have its limits. If your lawn has many steep hills, you'd be better off with the 42" mower. You could take partial passes on the uphill with the 59" mower, too. Keep the blades sharp, don't let the grass get too high, and the 59" is perfectly fine for most lawns...

Fast Hitch is a system for quick-attaching implements to the rear of the tractor. You want a belly-mount mower for best results, not a Fast Hitch mower. The belly-mount mower might need special brackets if your tractor has a Fast Hitch, though.

How do you tell if your tractor has a Fast Hitch? Well, does it just have a U-shaped drawbar in back? If so, it doesn't have Fast Hitch.

If your tractor has Fast Hitch, it will be obvious. There will be all sorts of linkages and pivots between the rear wheels, a bar running up the left side of the tractor to the hydraulic lift, and a hand crank on the right fender. The main feature of the fast hitch is a single rectangular socket smack dab in between the rear wheels of the tractor that moves up and down when you work the hydraulic lift.

I have bahia in my yard and its all mine will do to pull through halfway down with 42" and sharp blades, if I wait two weeks. I guess it would depend on if you mowed grass like a golf course or grass more like a field. Cubs are only about nine horsepower, lots of bottom though. Matt.

I have a 59 inch woods belly mower on my 1966 cub low-boy and it handles the mower just fine, unless you are mowing something that you are not supposed to be mowing with a finish mower in the first place. Most but not all cubs that I have seen have the 59 inch woods mower on them.

My two cents worth

I have a '49 Cub with a 59" Woods mower; works fine if you're in light grass or sea oats, not for bahia (sp?) for sure. I run my 59" as a "41 inch" by removing the rightmost blade and run the spindle as a "dummy"; only way I can mow the lawn.
