On my 300 utility the exhaust goes up, but the hood has been butchered some what to allow for that. I do not know if something was changed that required the hole be made larger, or if it originally went down. The tractor serial # is 996PJ, a 1955.
I want to get and keep it as original as possible, so what way does the smoke go? Thanks for any help.

My 300 Utility actually shows 4 different exhaust manifolds. two vertical and two down. Part # 362 536 R21 is a gas vertical, #358 644 R11 is distillate vertical. #361 564 R21 is gas underslung. For the distillate underslung a adapter just bolted to the top of the vertical manifold and went down towards the front of the engine. My parts book also show two different hoods for the 300U. The left hood for vertical exhaust is 365 393 R11 Underslung is 362 272 R21. Actually the vertical exhaust uses the same exhaust manifold as the 300 Farmall.

My parts manual shows only down. No listing for anything for an up model, My 300U has been modified for up very obviusly by the square hole cut into the hood.

We had a '55 300U that came with the exhaust going down. Like Hugh, we had problems in the hayfield when a drawbar pin collected enough loose hay to start a fire.
We turned the exhaust elbow up, and ran it out through the hood. That also solved the problem of the left foot-rest becoming pretty hot when plowing, even though there was a heat shield installed.
Turning the exhaust up was a perfect solution, until Dad caught the tip of the muffler on the clothes line....when Mom had clothes on the other end.

John: Mentioning your dad catching clothes line, reminded me of one night I was out plowing snow with 656, 2000 loader and newly installed cab. Normally I never strayed too far from home plowing snow, but this cab was making the job seem like fun. Kept getting more requests on drivways and yards, thus I wound up 5 miles from home. Next morning I was walking by tractor and noticed clothes line wraped around rear axle. I had about 75 feet of the stuff. Never heard any complaints until spring. Apparently Mrs C had been using her clothes dryer during winter months and never missed her clothes line until one nice spring day. At a social function I happened to hear about the missing clothes line. Mrs C couldn't believe anyone would be so low as to steal a clothes line. I decided I best confess, as she had decided it had to be someone close by and on foot. I took a lot of heat on that one.

Jim: Back when these tractors were new, I don't ever remember seeing a 300 with vertical exhaust. It was quite common on the 350. I think it was probably always an option. It just took 2 or 3 years and a few hay field fires, plus getting gassed by the underneath exhaust, they soon disappeared.

My dad was baling one day with a demo tractor, underneath exhaust. Starting field he was straddling first windrow, and being use to Farmalls, he didn't notice hay draging under tractor. Just about the time it broke into flames he lost it and pulling wagon behind baler, didn't notice until he got to corner and here was my brother and I trying to beat fire out with tree limbs we broke from a tree. We lost about 1/4 acre of hay that day. There were many such incidents across the land, thus underneath exhausts soon disappeared. Guys that operated these all day often complained about fumes, headaches, nausia, etc. If you have a butchered hood, probably someone had good cause.

The idea behind underneath exhaust was fine, in orchards, around other trees, etc. It just wasn't for the open field livestock farmer.

I have had several '55 and '56 300 utilities
and still have one which I have kept original.
All have had the exhaust systems going down
from a 180 degree elbow coming out of the top
of the manifold. The muffler is normally located
under the left side floor board. Hope this helps.

Vertical exhaust was likely an option, but most were down. I have a picture of a 330 with vertical exhaust.
