My Grandfather bought our W6 sometime in the 60's. It had been repainted red and white before he bought it at a dealer in Wisconsin. Some of the remaining paint is chipping off of the frame I am noticing what looks like orange paint underneath. Did IH use orange primer, or was it originally painted orange? It has no hydraulics, one wheel weight on each rear wheel, electric lights, starting, high compression gas engine, and a belt pulley. Can anyone think of a reason it might have been painted orange? Thanks for your input.

A lot of highway depts used 6 series tractors. A common color for such equipment is orange, along with any other color you can think of. It's not unusual at all.

Looks like any other faded red paint job Ive seen, with exception to the yellow spots on the grill.

I seen a couple H's that were faded to Orange like
the other post stated. My dad bought a used H that was repainted and we found underneath the bad paint job, it was also the faded orange. Supposedly that H was a 47, (Maybe early) as he had a M that was a late 47, and that never changed to an off color. (That one faded to a dark red.)

What"s the serial number? Most likely it"s a 46, IH ran out of red pigment due to war shortages for a short time, had to mix colors to get red, tended to fade to a yellow-orange color.

Or it could be orange, IH would paint a tractor any color you wanted, as long as your ordered enough to make it worth their while. I would put my money on the tractor being a 46 though.
