9 Speed trans. on an M ?

Does any one know what to look for when test driving this type of trans.? It is in an M, pull cable on the rt. side. It seems to shift into and out of gear smoothly. However 5th gear is not affected and should it also work? Is this a good option (ie: is it worth more) or should I stay away from it. This tractor also has an engine that is not original, it has a plate on the carb. side (fuel pump?) and the letter for the year is an E'. Could this be a combine engine and would it have more HP. Sorry for so many ? Ive never run across one before. Thanks, Andy

what the m-n-w 9 speed does it is a slideing 2 speed constant mesh gears, 5th is direct not affected , speeding up the constant mesh overdrives the stock transmission gears, the motor more than likely is a ih replacement

These guys are right about the reasons for the castings on that side. Fuel pump was one main reason. Also, look and see if there is a mount behind the pulley on the crankshaft. The U-6 mounted to its base off this mount. I have 4 U-6 engines and one is in an M. From most research I have done, they say it is the same as an M. I have one that has the bore of a Super M. There were quite a few variations with IH reman parts and such. If the casting numbers are ground off and stamped back over, it is probably a reman part.

evertone explained the nine speed very well. your m probably has a factory rebuilt block. they did all the extra maching on them so they would fit all applications. no power increase. the casting number on the block is most likely partially ground off and some new numbers and letters stamped on it.

I have a H with 9 speeds it makes raking hay nice. You can rake in high 1st at half throttle and your going about as fast as 4th gear at full throttle this really saves on fuel consumption.
And it gives you a little more fluff to your windrow. Carl

the 9 speed was an option from M&W. my M will pull a disc in either 1st or second in high range depending on field conditions. the motor is probably a power unit motor and could have more hp. a good way to check is to dynomometer test the tractor

Andy,
The 9-speed sounds good. You would enjoy it. You have to stop to shift into and out of the higher range. It allows for pulling lighter loads at greater speeds and shifting through the gears to 5th(5th gear is not affected). It is hard get started in standard road gear (5th), without it. We used to do some light field work in high low, pull wagon loads of hay in the lower high end gears, etc. It makes the tractor much more usable and that is saying something as the M is pretty neat anyway.

Two ranges in 1-4, no effect on fifth. If it has a combine or industrial engine, there is no internal increase in HP. I don't know about the combine engine, but the M/6 series service manual says there was an attachment to govern the U6 power unit at 1800 rpm as opposed to the M's 1450 (1500 was standard on power units). However, there was also an attachment to govern the U6 at 1200 rpm.

From my experiences with the 9 speed trans. everything sounds ok. I believe what it does is splits 4th and 5th gear several times. Please correct me somebody if I am wrong. The value to have it depends on what you plan to do with the tractor. I am not sure about the engine though. Someone else should be able to help on that one. Brad
