Mowing down sunflowers last week, Cmore's pto just quit. No bang, no grinding, seems to have sheared a pin or something. How do I get in to it to fix? Do I have to take off the top deck?? Thanks, Cmore

Is there a certain variety of sunflower seeds that you plant? I planted a row of them and the heads were so heavy a lot fell over. The birds
started on the seeds too. Does that happen when you have a field full of sunflowers? I ran the stalks through a shredder along with the sweet corn stalks and spread it over the garden. Hal

Take all the bolts out then you can remove the assy either the splines are worn or the lever that puts it in and out has maybe the two ears on the shift tube are gone.

I think Hugh has your problem pegged. But if not you do not have to remove the deck, Just remove the bolts holding the pto housing to the frame and pull it straight out. Its a simple mechinism and your problem should be plain to see. BTW you have to drain some gear oil or park the tractor with the front end low or you will end up with an oil spill. Good Luck!

I tried to remove the PTO housing, took out the four bolts, but nothing would move...mine has the belt pully drive. Is there a secret to removing the PTO drive that I'm missing?? Or, did I remove the wrong four bolts?? Thanks, Cmore

Cmore: Have a look at your PTO engage lever, there is a pin holds the lever in the engage shaft. I'm not sure the C housing is the shape to affect this. Last year while mowing with my SA, PTO stopped much the same as yours. The pin had come out of the lever allowing it to slip down through the engage shaft, where it contacted housing, thus not allowing it to go completely in gear. When PTO load increased it would pop out of gear.

I suspect my lever had enough rust or paint that lever only gradually slipped down through engage shaft. Just something to check. I know when it happened to me, I was at a loss as to how this could happen without noise.

Yes, thanks, I know about the small pin..it slipped out once and I replaced It. The PTO will not engage, even when you work the engage shaft (that goes into the PTO "box")....must be a small key inside that sheared...Cmore

My manual doesn't show a shear pin in the parts breakdown. There may be one on the mower unless you're sure the pto won't drive. May have sheared a woodruff key. Hal
PS: How was the sunflower crop? The Cardinals
love them.
