This one that really drives Me nuts! Went out this morning to try all the suggestions I got yesterday. First, pulled off dist. cap, check out wear and pitting, still looked normal, just a little bit. Pull off the cover, checked operation of points and condition, turned over and they looked fine! Put back together, pulled plug, checked for spark, hmmmm..., no spark, oops! Pull ignition switch!! Then try! Hmmmm..., now the ammeter shows discharge, last night it didn't! Put plug back in, fired up imediatelly! Darn it! Would rather find somethin' wrong and fix it!!! Now I'm gonna be wondering ever time I take her out to run! I hate fixing somethin' accidently! I would rather know what was wrong! What do You think I did by accident guys? At least she's running great again! Scott

Scott: Since I was in here last evening, I will join in again. Your distributor drive is obviously good. Coil and or condensor can do exactly that, quit when hot, next morning it will run fine.

Don't rule out that ampmeter gauge just yet either. I've had to replace two of those my lifetime. One quit and never started until I replaced it. The other one would work sometimes, and the sometimes one was in my 1963 Farmall 140. I can say the sometimes was not related to tractor being hot or cold. It was completely random.

I still say go to coil first, we old hands that have had tractors for 45+ years have experienced this a few more times than once.

I wonder if you have an intermittment problem with the push-pull switch. Next time it fails jump across the two lugs on the back and see if the ammeter moves to show a discharge without starting the tractor. El Toro mentioned the coil and condenser which could be candiates as well since it just stopped cold when running. Don't know what the ammeter would show if one of them would be open from a heat issue when the switch was pulled out. Good luck, Hal

I agree with El Toro, the coil sounds like the culprit. Have a SMTA that did the same thing but it was actually overcharging the system and putting too much juice thru the coil. Weird, but after regulating down to the normal 14V or so it quit overheating the coil. I still changed it out tho

Those coils and condensers will usually work fine
until they're heated up. That's why I said to try and start this morning. Don't stray too far from the barn. Hal
