Farmall M steering play

After 6 hours of bushhogging with my M my elbows and shoulders are numb from the constant beating from the play in the steering. The steering wheel will turn half to three quarters of a turn before affecting the front wheels. So much play I can"t use road gear even on a smooth road. I am new to this, where do I start? thanks,

Of course you need to fix the play in the steering and that will help some. But even with steering in good condition, one of the characteristics of the M is that the steering is very heavy. You'll still have sore arms and back until you get accustomed to it. Good way to develop those muscles.

This is a common problem, and you can access a lot of info from the archives. The place to start is by having the parts catalog handy - the exploded view is invaluable. Binder Books has reproductions if you need to order one.

3/4 of a turn is a lot of play and you may have to repair or renew several parts to get really good results. I would start with the obvious and easy things.

- make sure that the woodruff key between the front steering shaft and the universal joint is good.

- tighten the large nut at the top of the upper bolster located in the worm and sector gear oil pot. Look for broken or missing teeth while you are there. If the gear is shot, you may will need a "new" sector from the bone yard.

-tighten the second large nut on the end of the front steering shaft. Get to it by removing the cap on the front of the worm and sector oil pot. Check the bearing held in by the nut - if it's bad replace it.

- check the front wheels for play and make sure the bearings are good. This would be a good time to repack them too.

These fixes are relatively easy (you just have to remove the tin and a few bolts) and not terribly expensive. If you still have play you will need to replace one or more of the following: upper steering bushing, lower steering bushing, steering thrust bearing, and/or the thrust bearing spacer. These repairs will require removal of the front wheels, droping the bolster and pressing or driving out bushings and seals - not always hard, but always heavy and a little pricey. Good luck!
